StarCraft and Brood War — How to Play
What it is
StarCraft (1998) and its expansion Brood War (1998) are Blizzard's science-fiction real-time strategy games: three races — the human Terrans, the insectoid Zerg and the psionic Protoss — fighting over the Koprulu Sector. StarCraft: Remastered (2017) is the same game with new art, sound and online play; it shares one ladder with the original.
The basics
- Workers gather minerals and vespene gas; nearly everything costs both.
- Every unit uses supply: Terrans build Supply Depots, Zerg grow Overlords, Protoss warp in Pylons. Run out and production stops.
- Expand to new bases as the first ones run dry — the player with more mining usually wins the long game.
- The three races play completely differently: learn one well before trying the others.
Starting out
- Play the campaigns first: they teach each race in turn, and Brood War continues the story.
- Then skirmish against the computer and practise one opening (see Build Orders) until it is automatic.
- Read Install and Setup to get the game running and online.
