Diablo III

Diablo III launched on 15 May 2012 for Windows and macOS, twelve years after Diablo II and this time from Blizzard Entertainment itself rather than the closed Blizzard North. It sold 3.5 million copies in 24 hours and 12 million by the end of 2012, passing 30 million by August 2015 — and it still had one of the roughest launches in the genre.

  • Released: 15 May 2012 (PC/Mac); PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013; PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in August 2014; Nintendo Switch in November 2018.
  • Launch classes: Barbarian, Demon Hunter, Monk, Witch Doctor, Wizard — with the Crusader and Necromancer added later.
  • Setting: twenty years after Diablo II, opening on a falling star in New Tristram.
The launch
  • Error 37 — "the servers are busy at this time" — became the symbol of a launch where the always-online requirement met servers that could not take the load.
  • Always-online DRM, even for solo play, drew heavy criticism and has never been lifted on PC.
  • Two auction houses, one for gold and one for real money, quietly turned the loot game into a shopping game. Both were shut down on 18 March 2014 after Blizzard admitted the design had "really hurt" the game.

What followed is one of the better recoveries in the genre: the 2014 expansion and its loot rework turned Diablo III into the game it is remembered as.

Reaper of Souls

Reaper of Souls released on 25 March 2014 and is the pivot the whole game turns on. Malthael, once the Archangel of Wisdom, returns as the Angel of Death to steal the Black Soulstone and drain the mortals of Sanctuary.

What it added
  • Act V, in the plague-struck city of Westmarch and the Pandemonium Fortress beyond it.
  • The Crusader class.
  • Level cap raised to 70, with new skills and runes for every class.
  • Adventure Mode — the whole world unlocked, no campaign required.
  • Bounties and Nephalem Rifts, later joined by Greater Rifts and their timed leaderboards.
  • Paragon reworked into an account-wide, uncapped progression system.
Loot 2.0

Patch 2.0.1 arrived shortly before the expansion and rebuilt itemisation from the ground up: fewer drops, but drops that were smart — weighted toward your class and your stats, with legendaries carrying build-defining powers rather than slightly larger numbers. It launched alongside the removal of the auction houses, and the two changes together are what made the loot loop finally work.

Later additions
  • Kanai's Cube (patch 2.3, 2015) — extract a legendary power and carry it in three passive slots, a direct descendant of the Horadric Cube.
  • Set Dungeons, Challenge Rifts, and the season-long balance passes that followed.
  • Rise of the Necromancer (27 June 2017) — a paid pack adding the Necromancer, built as a tribute to the Diablo II class.

Seasons & Legacy

Seasons

Seasons began in August 2014 and became the shape of Diablo III's life after launch. Each one wipes the slate: a fresh character, a fresh economy, its own leaderboards, a themed buff, a free set from the Season Journey, and cosmetic rewards that only appear once. When a season ends, characters roll into the non-seasonal pool with everything they earned.

  • Seasons run roughly three months.
  • Each brings a theme — soul shards, altar of rites, ethereal weapons, visions of enmity — usually a large power boost on top of normal play.
  • Class sets are handed out free through the Season Journey, so a new seasonal character reaches the endgame in hours rather than weeks.
Where the game is now

Diablo III is in long-term maintenance: no new expansions, no new classes, and seasons that revisit and refine earlier themes rather than inventing new ones. Season 38: Ethereal Memory (March 2026) brought back Diablo II-style ethereal weapons, and Season 39: Shades of the Nephalem started on 27 June 2026, reviving the Season 22 theme with an extra Kanai's Cube slot and shadow clones spawned from pylons.

Legacy
  • The combat is still the most responsive in the series, and the console versions proved an action-RPG could feel native on a controller.
  • Rifts, Bounties, Adventure Mode and account-wide Paragon became the template Diablo IV inherited.
  • Its launch is the industry's standing example of what always-online and a real-money auction house do to a loot game — and its recovery is the standing example that a live game can be rebuilt.
  • The Darkening of Tristram anniversary event each January recreates the original Diablo, sixteen dungeon levels and all.
