Town NPCs

Town NPCs

Eight souls still hold Tristram against the dark below — the ones who sell, mend, heal and remember for every hero who dares the descent.

Each keeps to their place above ground: the forge, the tavern, the healer's door, the witch's hut across the river. What they offer a visitor is set beside their name.

Choose a townsperson to unfold their tale.

Name Role What they offer
Griswold keeps the last forge burning in Tristram, hammering out arms for those mad enough to descend. He buys, sells and mends weapons and armour, and his craft turns a few finds into named relics — the Empyrean Band from the Magic Rock, Griswold's Edge from the Anvil of Fury. A blunt, steady man who stayed at his anvil while the town emptied around him.
Pepin, physician to Tristram, tends the wounded and the fevered and asks no coin — step to him and your hurts are mended. He also sells potions, elixirs and healing staves for the deeper dark. It was Pepin who mended Farnham's body after the cathedral, though not the ruin done to his mind.
Ogden keeps the Tavern of the Rising Sun with his wife, the last warm hearth in a dying town. He trades in goods and rumours, and it is often from him that a hero first hears of the horrors below — his stolen sign, the fate of King Leoric. Out of pity he lets the broken Farnham drink away his days by the fire.
Deckard Cain, keeper of Tristram's old histories, reads the lore none else remember and names the strange relics dragged up from the labyrinth. His counsel points to the evil beneath the cathedral and the traitor archbishop who loosed it. Wise, weary, and certain the darkness is far from finished.
Farnham followed Archbishop Lazarus into the cathedral to save the prince and walked instead into the Butcher's slaughter. He lived, and even dragged Griswold clear, but though Pepin healed his wounds nothing could mend his shattered mind. Now he drowns the memory in Ogden's ale and will not go below again.
Adria the witch appeared in Tristram as the evil stirred, raising a hut across the river to sell what the town's shops will not — spell books, staves and darker draughts. She speaks in riddles of powers older than the cathedral. None know where she came from, only that she deals in the arcane and asks no questions.
Gillian serves at the Tavern of the Rising Sun and stays in Tristram only to care for her aged grandmother, when all sense says to flee. She offers the day's gossip and a kind word to those bound for the dark. Caught between duty and dread, she waits for the horror below to end.
Wirt was a child when Lazarus's ambush took him below, made to witness the Butcher's work before the demons tore away his leg. He came back with a peg and a hard, mercenary heart. Now he deals in a single stolen treasure at a time and charges gold merely to show it — bitter, guarded, and out to fleece every hero who passes.
Lester works the last farmstead beyond Tristram's river, where the soil has curdled black and something festers among the crops. He presses a Rune Bomb on any armed soul willing to carry it down into the Hive and burn out the corruption at its root, and to the one who returns he gives the Auric Amulet — all a broken farmer has left to offer.
Celia is a child adrift in Tristram's ruin, robbed of the one small comfort left to her — a toy dragged off into the dark by the Hork Demon. She asks no gold and no glory, only that some hero descend into the Hive, put the beast down, and carry her keepsake home.
Shrouded head to hoof in a cow's hide, the Complete Nut keeps watch over an empty pasture and mutters of a skin stolen away into the Hive. Bear his Rune Bomb into the depths and reclaim what was taken, and the strange herdsman will count you among the few souls he abides.

No townsperson answers to that search.

Named from the game's own towner table as preserved by DevilutionX. That file also carries a wounded townsman of the dungeon and three roaming cattle, who are not residents of the town and are not listed here.
